The Department of Bengali started its journey with six full time teachers and fifty students. At present the department admits 100 students to each semester. A number of eminent scholars and researchers from various other Universities as well as distinguished writers have delivered talks at the department. The department has organised a number of seminars and workshops on its own and in collaboration with other institutions.

The PG Department of Commerce of this University UGB started its M.Com course from January 2012 onwards. At present there are two full-time faculty members and ten students in each semester. Teachers and Students of this Department take parts in various Academic Programmes. The department has also added a new feather in its crown by starting Ph.D. programme in the year 2012. The Department has also planned to introduce M.Phil. Programme very soon.

The Department of Economics under the School of Social Science, University of Gour Banga started its expedition with two faculties Ms. Sushma Subba and Dr. Tushar Kanti Nandi with 1 student on January 19th, 2012. Presently the strength of the students has reached 6 including both Semester II & IV with one permanent Faculty though the enrolment capacity is 75. Ms. Sushma Subba, presently, heads the department.

The Department of Education, UGB, had started its academic journey from the very beginning of the University. Initially it had only three faculties and 50 students in one semester. Now it is a full-fledged department with six faculties and an intake of 75 students in each semester. The Department offers P.G. courses with four special papers - Educational Technology, Teacher Education, Guidance & Counselling and Special Education. The Department has already completed coursework for its first batch of Ph.D scholars. The Department has also a vision of offering M.Phil and B.Ed/M.Ed courses in near future. And it aims at preparing the students in such a way that they may serve the humanity alongside their academic excellence.

The Department of English is one of the premier departments of the University. The department is supported by a committed team of professors who aim at effectively delivering a course in English, which is renowned for uniformly maintaining its standards of academic excellence over the years. The Department offers M.A., M. Phil and Ph.D. programme in English. The syllabi of the courses cover a wide range of texts, authors, movements, literary trends, theories and schools of criticism. The final semester of the post-graduate programme offers courses in specialized areas. Strategies of teaching include lecture method, audio-visual techniques, student seminars, term papers and class discussions. At present the Department of English operates with 5 full-time teachers, and enlists 165 students and 19 research scholars

The post graduate Department of Geography of the University of Gour Banga started its journey since January, 2012, with four faculty members and forty students under semester system. At present the department of Geography is consisting six faculty members and forty students in each semester. The department of Geography offers not only PG Course but also M.Phil. and Ph.D. Programme. The department is well equipped with RS & GIS Laboratory, Soil and Environment Laboratory, Research Laboratory for M.Phil. and Ph.D. students, Smart Class Room and a Library. Department offers four Special Papers viz. 1) Geoinformatics 2) Fluvial Geomorphology 3) Advanced Geomorphology 4) Geography of Development and Under Development and 5) Geography of Social Wellbeing.

The Department is running two courses at present, first semester and third semester. Total seventy two students have been enrolled in this current academic year in the First Semester course and eighty two students in the Third Semester course. In 2014, the Department successfully completed Ph.D course work and started the Ph.D programme. Apart from academic achievements, the Department has conducted one international conference on the history of modern Bengal. Scholars from India and Bangladesh took part in the conference and exchanged academic ideas. The Department took initiatives in promoting the history of this region and conducted series of lectures on relevant issues. The students of the Department made their mark in different co-curricular activities including sports and cultural programmes.

The Department of Philosophy of the University of Gour Banga was established in 2012. The first day of starting classes of the department was 19th January, 2012. It was held in two rooms of Satya Chowdhury Stadium, Malda, rented by the university, along with two Assistant Professors: (1) Dr. Sukumar Chandra Roy, (joined on 14.01.2012) and (2) Purbayan Jha, (joined on 16.01.2012) and 70 students. So, the day was historically important for the department. In the next month i.e. in February, 2012, Dr. Ruchira Majumder joined the department as Associate Professor of Philosophy. With these three faculty members the department started its journey. After 1 semester year, the department had shifted to the main campus of the university in the Dr. A. P. J Abdul Kalam Bijnan Bhavan and finally to Acharya Binoy Kumar Sarkar Kala Bhavan, the Humanities Building of the university at the end of the year 2015. In the meantime, Dr. Jhadeswar Ghosh joined as Associate Professor in September, 2014. The department has also got two more faculty members by the fag end of 2015. Now the total strength of faculty members is five (5). The department offers a syllabus which stimulates the students to think critically on the philosophical problems. The key philosophical areas of study such as epistemology, logic, ethics, metaphysics, philosophy of language are studied both from Indian and Western perspectives, as well as modern Indian thinkers, aesthetics, continental philosophy, philosophy of mind and many more are there in the syllabus with updated developments in those areas. The faculty members are actively engaged in research works and eminent philosophers are invited as visiting faculties to deliver special lectures which enable the students to have sufficient exposure to the domain of knowledge.
